UC Davis Health has completed its Climate Action Plan, a campus-specific framework designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen climate resilience and support the continued delivery of safe, reliable health care at the Sacramento campus.
The plan outlines how UC Davis Health will contribute to broader University of California and UC Davis climate goals while addressing the operational needs of an academic medical center, where patient care, research and critical facilities depend on reliable, around-the-clock energy systems.
Developed for the UC Davis Health Sacramento campus, the Climate Action Plan establishes a roadmap for reducing emissions, advancing sustainability, modernizing infrastructure and improving operational resilience. It also includes considerations for climate equity and environmental justice, recognizing that climate-related hazards and disruptions can affect communities in different ways.
The plan is organized around greenhouse gas inventories, emissions forecasts and reduction targets, as well as measures across six focus areas. Two of the largest strategies identified are transitioning to 100% clean and greenhouse gas-free electricity and advancing decarbonization of the Central Utility Plant. Together, those measures are expected to account for most of the emissions reductions needed to meet UC Davis Health’s long-term targets.
The Climate Action Plan also supports UC Davis Health’s resilience planning by identifying actions that can help maintain operations during climate-related disruptions, including extreme heat, drought, wildfire smoke and flooding. These efforts are intended to strengthen energy reliability, emergency preparedness, transportation access, workforce readiness and continuity of care.
Implementation will continue through annual greenhouse gas inventory updates, performance indicators and ongoing engagement with campus and community stakeholders. The plan will also inform future decisions about infrastructure, operations and sustainability investments.
