Sustainability hosts successful Earth Month celebration
The sustainability team hosted a celebration on April 15 in honor of Earth Month. Staff and students got the chance to learn about sustainable programs happening here at UC Davis Health and throughout the Sacramento region.
During the event, several departments provided information, hands-on experiences, and goodies to take home, all surrounding the ideas of sustainability.
For example, the Sustainability team handed out reusable utensil kits as part of an effort to reduce single-use plastic waste at UC Davis Health.

Johnny Scott from Plant Operations and Maintenance’s grounds crew shared his expertise on plants and pesticide-free weed management.
While Mr. Scott provided his expertise from a booth, other members from PO&M showed their support at the event.
Employees discussed changes they would like to see around the health campus with representatives from Facilities Planning + Design. One of the top remarks was: "more bike parking!"
The Clinical Practice Council Sustainability Subcommittee shared ways to reduce waste in clinical settings.
Earth Day Art Competition
During the event, attendees voted on student artwork submitted to an Earth Day Art Competition. The competition invited students from both UC Davis and UC Davis Health to showcase original artwork illustrating the impacts of climate change on ecosystems, human health, and the environment.
The winners of the UC Davis Health Earth Day Art Competition 2026 are:
First Place: Alexis Ivec, UC Davis Health School of Medicine student
Second Place: Nathifa Nasim, UC Davis graduate student, studying Biochemistry, Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology
Third Place: Itzel Ramirez, UC Davis undergraduate student studying Environmental Toxicology

Bike Repair
Staff and students who pre-registered received free bicycle tune ups.
Free bicycle repairs were made possible through the Green Commuter Program’s partnership with 50 Corridor TMA and Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates (SABA).
Lastly, the Green Commuter Program team reminded staff and students that Earth Day can be celebrated every day when choosing a green commute method.
