'Climate Raising' Challenge Mural Winners Announced
Over fall quarter 2021, undergraduate and graduate students were invited to participate in a "climate raising" mural competition. Organizers requested that submissions inspire answers to the questions: “How might agriculture be part of the climate solution in Sacramento Valley?” and “How do we visually communicate this message to inspire local action?” A jury of designers and artists have selected the winners from a pool of 27 entries.
First prize goes to Rachael Dal Porto whose design “Hungry for Connection” won the $400 first prize. Her work will soon be painted on a barn between Davis and Woodland by community members, under the guidance of a professional muralist.
Dal Porto is currently a civil and environmental engineering PhD student with undergraduate degrees from Sacramento State in Civil Engineering and Chemistry, and a Masters of Science from UC Davis in civil and environmental engineering.
Second prize goes to Rocio Chavez whose mural “Bring Back the Bugs” won the $200 award. Chavez is an undergraduate student in her final year of studying landscape architecture. Her interests include sustainability and the cultivation of inclusive communities.
The mural is scheduled to be painted on a barn between Davis and Woodland on March 26. Stay tuned for additional details!
