Sustainable Food Systems Activity

The Silo Union has identified issues which hinder progress towards a more sustainable food system. The Silo will engage their customers in a letter-writing campaign to bring attention to the next steps in our sustainability plan. The goal is to create a sense of urgency and awareness with decision makers in food retail.

Energy Efficiency: Western Cooling Efficiency Center, CA Lighting and Technology Center

This tour will show off all the “toys” in the shop and highlight many of the dozens of cool projects, most of which focus on developing and commercializing energy savings in less than 2 years.

Tahoe Environmental Research Center, UC Davis, Incline Village, Nevada

The Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences building has examples of sustainable design, construction and landscaping. It is one of only 26 facilities in the world to earn LEED platinum certification.

The domes feature organic agriculture and permaculture, low-impact construction, energy efficiency, composting system, and a low ecological footprint. Come explore!

Bovine Bio-Bubbles

Take a first-hand look at how these greenhouse-like structures enable scientists to measure greenhouse gases, waste, “fugitive dust,” and volatile organic compounds from cows, the only controlled project like this in the U.S.

A terrific example of sustainable living on campus! Current residents will lead tours of their amazing organic gardens while discussing the solar panels, bee hives, chickens, cob benches, fruit trees, and compost demos!

Tercero Dining Hall has been nearly zero waste for almost a year! See how post consumer food waste is collected with other compostable materials. Other recycling programs in operation too.

Yolo County Central Landfill, one of the most innovative landfills in the nation

Get a close look at one of the most innovative, environmentally conscious landfills in the country! If this type of landfilling was used for 50% more of the waste landfilled in the US, it would create renewable methane energy equal to 100,000 barrels of oil per day!

Student Organic Farm, Ecological Garden and Market Garden

The Student Farm is home to the UC Davis Children’s Garden Program, composting for the Farm and Project Compost, and the Market Garden which provides fresh organic produce via the Coffee House and a CSA program.

Meet at the Field House on the south side of Extension Center Drive, where Orchard Park Dr. dead ends.

Greenstop, Design Museum, UC Davis

Greenstop is a green rest stop design competition. A talk by Professor Heath Schenker, Landscape Architecture, will prepare you to view the exhibit.

Fleet Services Electric Vehicle Ride and Drive Demo Open House

Fleet Services has invited many dealers and manufacturers of street-legal electric vehicles to show off their products. Electric vehicles will be available to view, sit in, and test drive. Drop by and look over the latest electric vehicle offerings.

Sustainable Shopping Tour at the Bargain Barn

Come visit the Bargain Barn for an after hours tour and sustainable shopping experience. The Bargain Barn diverts items from the landfill by returning into circulation the University’s Excess and Surplus Property through sales to the public and University departments. Stop by and check out our diverse selection of gently used products ranging from office furniture to scoreboards. Special after-hours opportunity today from 1-3pm to purchase those items you simply can’t live without!

World-renowned Biogas Energy facility, guided by Professor Ruihong Zhang

The Biogas Energy Project is the first large-scale demonstration in the United States of an “anaerobic phased solids digester” that diverts organic matter from plants and animals, such as food waste and yard clippings, away from landfills and converts it to energy. That reduces greenhouse gas emissions from landfills and turns trash into clean energy.

Botanical Conservatory Greenhouse; Tim and a student will be your guides

This greenhouse has over 3,000 plant species, including examples from most of the world’s climatic regions, including deserts, bogs, and rainforests. Learn about plant strategies for survival, diversity, adaptation, and animal-plant interactions.

UC Davis Arboretum: California Native Plant Garden, guided by Ellen Zagory and staff

Visit our beautiful native garden where you will learn how to grow California native plants in the Central Valley and what plants grow here to support birds, beneficial insects and native pollinators.

UC Davis Arboretum: Valleywise Practices Storer Garden, guided by Ellen Zagory and staff

At the Storer Garden see the best of flowers grasses and shrubs from around the world that grow with only every-other-week irrigation. Learn practices for water conservation, plants to help pollinators and other beneficial insects, and how to use them in your own backyard.

Davis Central Park Gardens

Central Park Gardens is a teaching venue for sustainable and water-wise gardening. Demonstration areas include butterfly and hummingbird plants, locally adapted roses, a lawn to meadow transformation, and year-round vegetable gardens.
