Energy & Atmosphere

Reduction of Energy Use

The California Lighting Technology Center is supplying the campus and 10 other UC and California State University campuses with samples of its energy efficient technology. At UC Davis, the demonstration technology is being used in Webster Hall dormitory bathrooms, in Meyer Hall and in exterior lighting on some temporary buildings.

Renewable Energy Initiatives

The interdisciplinary Energy for the Future Initiative focuses all current energy efforts into a single coordinated program. It targets three areas: energy for transportation systems, renewable energy, and energy at the molecular frontier. Among other initiatives, Chevron Corp. will fund up to $25 million in research at UC Davis in the next five years to develop affordable, renewable transportation fuels from farm and forest residues, urban wastes and crops grown specifically for energy.

Atmospheric Impacts and Carbon Budgeting

UC Davis is one of only three UC campuses that are members of the California Climate Action Registry. Membership means the campus has begun taking inventory of its greenhouse gas emissions. The results will be submitted to the Registry, a voluntary program for businesses, governments and organizations that want to measure their output of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases.

Best Practice Award for Lighting Retrofit

A Best Practice Award for a Student Housing lighting retrofit project was presented to UC Davis in 2006 at the fifth annual Sustainability Conference, held jointly by UC, California State University and the California Community Colleges.
